City of Los Angeles Diversity and Inclusion Training

The Challenge

The City of Los Angeles rolled out a major Diversity & Inclusion initiative for members of all 99 neighborhood councils. The experience needed to engage council members while providing measurable results. The primary challenge was to create a training experience that was not only informative and transformative but also accessible and engaging for a diverse workforce with varying levels of knowledge and sensitivity towards diversity and inclusion issues.

The Journey

Storyboard filmed multiple segments in conjunction with the City of LA and our DEI partners at USC's Race and Equity Center to craft an engaging training program that featured:

• A Fully Interactive Course

Utilizing storytelling and module-based learning to make complex concepts relatable and understandable.

• Accessibility Features

Ensuring that the program was accessible to all employees was critical from the beginning, with the inclusion of features like closed captions and fully translated modules in multiple languages.

Results

The Training Program was launched citywide to all neighborhood council members, which revealed significant post-launch improvements:

Increased Awareness | 19% increase in employee's self-reported awareness and understanding of gender bias principles.

Positive Feedback | Over 80% of participants rated the training as "excellent," highlighting its relevance, impact, and the quality of the media and interactive materials.

Noticible Change | Neighborhood Council leadership has indicated noticible improvements in policies and discussions among the council groups.
